What is Kitchen Sink?
a magazine for people who think too much
Kitchen Sink is a quarterly print publication exploring independent art, identity, culture and politics. It is the premiere publishing program of the Neighbor Lady Community Arts Project, an organization that promotes arts communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Featuring political and social journalism that challenges ideologies of liberals and conservatives alike, arts coverage that relies on essays rather than reviews, and ponderings about sex, food and god, Kitchen Sink is your pipeline to innovative thought.
Kitchen Sink was founded in the fall of 2001 by a group of writers, artists and editors who wanted to make a magazine for people just like us. We not only wanted to make a magazine for creative, hard-working, intelligent and well-read adults, we wanted to create a magazine for people who think too much. We spend a lot of time considering everything from what new record to buy, to what candidate to support, to what bookstore to support today, and we talk about our decisions with friends, we write, draw and publish our ruminations in Kitchen Sink.
KS editorial consists of seven sections:
Louder Than Words: music and how we hear it
Reverse Angle: film, TV, DVD special features and festivals
Paper City: literature, poetry and short fiction
Stories With Pictures: comics, cartoons and illustrations
Untitled: visual art
R:evolution: politics, culture and gender
Sex, Food & God: and travel too

Since the first issue debuted in October 2002, Kitchen Sink has gained a reputation for both literary excellence and reader loyalty. KS was the multiple recipient of Best of the Bay awards from all three Bay Area newsweeklies and of the prestigious Utne Independent Press Award for Best New Title. We continue to be nominated for Best-of awards, both locally and nationally. Additionally, KS is the proud founder of the Indie Mag All Stars, a group of local publications that host literary readings, along with partners ranging from Watchword Press and Other magazine to The Believer magazine and McSweeney s. KS produces art shows, music events and festivals. Our readers subscribe and buy subscriptions for their friends. Nevertheless, the community that reads, knows and loves KS is larger than our subscription and print numbers can tell--most of our letters to the editor come from folks who picked up KS at a friend s house.
Who reads Kitchen Sink?
smart, creative women and men who think too much
Kitchen Sink readers are typically 25 to 40 years old, college-educated, and earn their paychecks by doing everything from computer programming to toy design to green construction to freelance writing. They are politically progressive, seeking an alternative to both the corporate-influenced viewpoints of mass media publications and the dogmatic, predictable posturings of many liberal magazines.
Creative and intelligent people, they want arts un-coverage: articles on music, film, literature and visual art that expose the nerve endings of our daily existence. But as fun-loving individuals, they insist on being entertained by what they read, not intimidated by it.
Bottom line Kitchen Sink fans are conscious consumers, but still add to their book, music and magazine collections on a weekly, if not daily, basis. And they will readily admit a weakness for hipster clothes, revolutionary hair products, geeky computer equipment and other necessities of modern living.
