Submission guidelines

General Guidelines
We publish articles, features, short fiction, poetry, comic strips, illustrated stories and the occasional first-person essay. Most of our articles will offer an original way to consider or create or comment upon art, culture and identity.

As an San Francisco Bay Area based magazine, we take advantage of what this area offers, but we strongly believe that within the local arts or culture scene in any given region, there lies a story or theme with larger cultural or political implications - it's up to the writer or artist to dig up and develop those themes.

We welcome article and creative writing queries and submissions. Please take a minute to read both the magazine mission statement and the individual section descriptions. The best way to submit or query is by e-mail but we do accept hard copies of articles and creative writing sent to the KS mailbox accompanied by an SASE.

Please submit your article to the appropriate editor and include a note about yourself, your experience and background as a writer and why you're pitching a particular story. You might at that time also request more information about the section of interest.

If you are sending a pitch, please also include two to three writing samples (ideally published clips) via e-mail, either as a Word attachment, a list of URLs or by snail mail to the address above along with an SASE.

At this time, Kitchen Sink cannot offer monetary compensation for editorial or creative writing -we're all volunteers, too. We do offer you access to interviews, entrance to festivals, conferences and shows, promotional materials and an introduction to a loyal audience of both the print and online KS projects. Writers and artists will receive two complimentary copies of the appropriate issue and a larger number if you are local or cover excess postage. We also offer our writers promotional opportunities via our monthly e-newsletter and discounted advertising.

Please allow editors up to two weeks to respond to email correspondence and a month for snail mail as most of us have at least one other day job.

WE LIKE IT WHEN YOU SUBMIT!

The editors at Kitchen Sink have been overwhelmed by the response we ve gotten to ourcall for submissions over the past couple of years. We ve enjoyed reading your work and publishing new voices has always been and will always be part of our editorial mission. Unfortunately, there s just not enough time in a day for our volunteer staff to work through so much great work. We ve decided to put a submission fee into place.

Unsolicited writers will now be required to include a $10 reader fee along with their fiction and poetry submissions.

You can make your payment in advance online. Be sure to print your PayPal confirmation of payment and include it with your submission!

You can also include a check with your submission made payable to Kitchen Sink.

Upon receipt of online or mail payment your submission will be forwarded to the appropriate editor.
